Could be dirty carb causing them to run lean or if you are lucky a blown head gasket. Pull the head and check it.

There is no cyl head on this motor. You'll have to remove the powerhead, 'split' the crankcase, and the entire rotating mass (pistons, rods, crankshaft) comes out in one big Lump.

Add to the list of possible causes; overheating, carboned-up rings, too much spark advance, poor quality gas, overpropping the engine.

Before you tear it apart, remove the middle trransfer cover on the starboard side and inspect the pistons, rings and cylinder walls. You will likely see scratches in the cylinder walls.
