Background
I have read many posts in here.
  1. You are all very polite and knowledgable, wonderful!
  2. You have renewed my interest in keeping the old OB running. I was surprised to read so many posts about this same old motor dated this year.
  3. I have already done a whole lot of maintenance to this motor, had it a while, but I am a little weary of it.
  4. Yes, I do have electronic shift and it is almost all still working (disconnected the safety start swt. at the throttle cam)

This season I replaced the water pump and thermostat and re-welded the reverse drive dog and replaced the lower end seals etc. It was running great until just last weekend.
Now I want to get rid of it.

My Problem
I was out on Puget Sound and I gave it full throttle for a little while (5-10 min.). Yeah, everybody was impressed and I burned up some fuel. After that I thought I had sucked up some air as it ran low on fuel.
But it has been doing the following ever since, even with good gas and good fuel pressure.

First, it sounds great at 1/2 to 2/3 throttle but it will not go any higher, like it used to.
Second, as you decrease to 1/3 or less it sputters like one cylinder is not firing right, or starving. Increasing throttle brings it back to smooth running.
Third, as you approach idle it runs fine for about a minute then just tapers off to die like you turned off the gas.
Fourth, it is hard to start. It will ignite once which disengages the starter and it just spins. To get it started it must have just been shut off (hot) or I must squirt fuel unto the intake, then it takes right off and will keep running if I give it more throttle at a higher rpm.

Weird huh?

I pumped the bulb during run and it makes no difference, it does not appear to be a fuel issue. It has new plugs as of the day I was showing off full throttle.
It has been a couple years since visiting the points and timing.
It will run for hours at 1/2 throttle and sounds great (fortunately), but I think it is still using more gas. I dunno maybe not.

lets try check spark on both, and compression, post the #'s. also check spark when it is missing. your motor will run on one cylinder.

I've been busy...

I did finally get out to the boat and check the compression. After several turns both cyl. came up to exactly 150 psi. I suppose that is good.
The plugs look good but the #1 plug is a little wet and has just a little black on one side of the insulator.

I have not hooked up the timing light yet but that is next.

I'm not in a hurry, I hope that's OK.

iwombat,

I'm in south Puget Sound, Tumwater. A little way from you I guess. I have an old 18 ft. homemade boat called Lost Coin. Here are some really old pics.

The boat is about 20 years old. That is, we (Daniel Taylor & I) finished it 20 years ago.

I recently scanned a lot of the build photos. I need to put them up on my blog. It sleeps 3 and has a head and galley, great in winter, blah blah blah.

As far as the motor issues go ... I need to replace my electrical clips on the timing light before I can check timing and spark. Grrr, why does everything need fixed before you can use it?

just pull the plug, and ground it to the block, see if you get spark, use insulated pliers it sounds, ask if you are not firing on one, or have dirty low speed jets.
