hi guys,

have a merc 888 ford 302 i/o in a 75 glastron. a few things...

big problem is that the water is getting really hot...what are some of the things other than the obvious water pump i should be looking for. the engine otherwise runs fine..outside of a now dead battery with rusted away terminals ...ahhh the joys of inheriting a used boat.

also....it idles fine.... but when in gear it died several times. wondering if it is as simple as upping the idle screw or something else. any thoughts?

other than the obvious water pump
Assuming you are calling the pump mounted on the engine with the v belt turning it, the water pump, that probably is NOT your problem.
There is a raw water pump in the outdrive that is the first thing to check.

If the engine dies when you put it into gear, you probably need a new lower shift cable

What you really need is an OEM service manual so you can get some idea what you are working with.
