Hey guys,
Finally got the ol Evinrude running perfectly and got her nice an tuned up. Now for a cosmetic restoration and a few new wires and new fuel pump then my friend will be using her on a lake/bay boat. I'm not really sure I like the paint/decal scheme for 1972, so I am considering making the motor look like this 1991 Johnson on the left. (I can get decals for this year easily). He is not concerned with authenticity. However, Do you guys think this would look alright or should I go with the original gold and white? Except for the angled part of the skeg this motor looks the same as mine.

Actually if you look carefully very little is the same. The cowls if put side by side will look suprisingly different, the stern bracket is a lot different. Mid section at quick glance seems the same but no parts interchange. Gearcase has a longer more pointy shape .

In 72 they used plastic Appliques instead of decals on the V4s
Anyways... do what you want to do. I don't think the decal from
a 91 johnson will fit the cowl of a 72 evinrude, not without some trimming. I could be wrong though.

Well is the original color paint still available?
Local marine store doesn't seem to carry it but I will try Ebay and others.

Peter McDowell at www.nymarine.ca specializes in exact color match for the original paint if you want it "right".
