How long should my motor idle in a big bucket before the thermostat opens to allow cooling water to run through the motor? The motor is on the transom and properly submerged. I'm test running the motor for a very short time and the motor is not releasing any water from the upper exhaust port. I'm afraid to let it run very long because I don?t want to over heat the motor. Thank you. Please help:cool:

it should start peeing within the first 10 seconds. if it doesn't it's stuck and needs a little treatment. you can try to "warm up" the engine a little, thus provoking the thermostat to keep opening up from the engines heat. but don't do this long so you can avoid damage.

Thank you very much for your quick reply. I just received this motor from a friend of my fathers. It supposed to have 15 running hours and looks like brand new. I will look into having the thermostat worked on. Thanks again, Jeff.

There should be water discharge within seconds, not because the thermostat opens that quickly, but because there are two routes for the water to take through the powerhead. One route bypasses the thermostat, therefor the 'stat doesn't impede the flow. What the 'stat does do is modify the flow routes through the cooling system.
