Re: new engine

You will get responses that say there is a difference, but it is the accessories and the distributor and brass freeze plugs. Thats it

Howdy,

Well, it depends on what you want......do you want a used wrecking yard engine or do you want a rebuilt engine?

With a wrecking yard engine you may be pulling it right back out in a very short time. It's a crap shoot.

The other choice is to go to a machine shop and have them rebuild yours or go to somewhere like US ENGINES or similar and have them provide a longblock for you.

Cheers,

Re: new engine

I just bought and had a new engine installed in my boat. I have a 1986 Bayliner Capri that had a 305 in it. I ended up putting a new MARINE 350 in it.

I bought it form these guys: www.alengine.com.

I will go back to them if I ever need another engine for anything. The guy I dealt with (Rick) was very nice and understanding that I didn't know very much, and was extremely helpful. Give them a try. I paid $1599 shipped to my door and I was very happy. It came with a one year unlimited mileage warranty for some piece of mind too.

Just a thought.

You didn?t mention what year you are working with, but one thing comes to mind.
Is your engine carbureted or injected? Does it use a mechanical or electrical fuel pump?

If you are gonna start with a core from a wrecking yard and yours has a mechanical fuel pump you will have to find a 1985-86 Chevy Astro Van. Vin code ?N?. After that they went to fuel injection and the mounting bosses for the mechanical fuel pumps were not even cast in the block.
The S10 trucks and T10 Blazers didn?t come with the 4.3 until 1988 and were also injected using the same block casting.

If yours uses an electrical fuel pump, you should be able to find many cores in wrecking yards. If you are rebuilding it anyway and want to bump the power a bit look for the 1997 and newer Vortec engines, as the heads breathe better. There are also several manufactures that make a marine performance cam for them as well.

Or, if ya want a quick job and a warranty call a local rebuilder in your area.

I am sure you meant to say a rebuilt and not new engine.

Brand new crate 4.3 marine engines can be purchased at Michigan Motorz for $2300. Do a google search.

This is true, just to add, the 96' and later 4.3 S-10 truck engines are the Vortec motors, and have the sought after better Vortec heads, if you find a W vin. code engine (usually 4WD) it has a hotter stock cam, but only 10hp more then the X vin (2WD version), Also, these engines require a matching Vortec designed manifold, you can't use the truck manifold, because it is not setup for marine use, due to emission equipment, & ECM design, But if you can find one to work, these later engines are the desired ones to use. Finally, there's no Factory performance cams for these balance shaft (after 1992) engines, but there is a somewhat limited selection of aftermarket ones, I haven't seen a marine cam for these yet? because that's what I want to put in My 95' S-10 4.3 V6 pickup.

You are correct, they did start in 96? I picked up a set off of a 97? and that year stuck in my head.

Edelbrock makes manifolds for the Vortec heads, but it depends on your application. Is it injected or carbureted? Mine is carbureted so it will work. Also, Comp Cams makes marine cams for the v-8. Pick the cam specs to fit your range and take them to a reputable cam grinder, have them build one for your 4.3, or have them recommend a cam grind, they will probably have one available for you

I am working with an old school machinist on rebuilding my engine. He mentioned that the 4.3 Vortec is based off of the same V8 Vortec less two cylinders.
