just bought and had a new engine installed in my boat.
You didn?t mention what year you are working with, but one thing comes to mind.
Is your engine carbureted or injected? Does it use a mechanical or electrical fuel pump?
If you are gonna start with a core from a wrecking yard and yours has a mechanical fuel pump you will have to find a 1985-86 Chevy Astro Van. Vin code ?N?. After that they went to fuel injection and the mounting bosses for the mechanical fuel pumps were not even cast in the block.
The S10 trucks and T10 Blazers didn?t come with the 4.3 until 1988 and were also injected using the same block casting.
If yours uses an electrical fuel pump, you should be able to find many cores in wrecking yards. If you are rebuilding it anyway and want to bump the power a bit look for the 1997 and newer Vortec engines, as the heads breathe better. There are also several manufactures that make a marine performance cam for them as well.
Or, if ya want a quick job and a warranty call a local rebuilder in your area.
This is true, just to add, the 96' and later 4.3 S-10 truck engines are the Vortec motors, and have the sought after better Vortec heads, if you find a W vin. code engine (usually 4WD) it has a hotter stock cam, but only 10hp more then the X vin (2WD version), Also, these engines require a matching Vortec designed manifold, you can't use the truck manifold, because it is not setup for marine use, due to emission equipment, & ECM design, But if you can find one to work, these later engines are the desired ones to use. Finally, there's no Factory performance cams for these balance shaft (after 1992) engines, but there is a somewhat limited selection of aftermarket ones, I haven't seen a marine cam for these yet?because that's what I want to put in My 95' S-10 4.3 V6 pickup.
