G'day mates,

Question 1: Where is the mfg plate located on this motor? I don't know what model I have.

Question 2: Is it possible to damage a fuel pump by connecting the line from gas can to motor backwards and pumping it a lot?

I used this motor 3 times and it ran flawlessly. Yesterday I could not get it to start at all.

The ID plate would be attached to the port transom bracket.

No, connecting the fuel line backwards would not damage the fuel pump.

Thanks Joe --9R73B is on the plate.

New question: I can turn over after putting some fuel into carb, but I cannot keep motor running. I did a "blow test" from fuel intake through pump to carb. I disconnected the fuel pump outlet hose and pumped the bulb and plenty of fuel came out. Based on this info, can I assume that my carb needs some attention? If so, any good starting points? (good means cheap)

Float valve might be stuck shut. If this is your lucky day you might force it open by mashing harder on the squeeze bulb. Otherwise, carb has to come apart. But first, confirm by removing the slotted hex head drain screw from the bottom of the carburetor and see if gas runs out. If so, it isn't the float valve after all.

Model number 9R73B indicates the engine is a 1973 9.5hp Johnson.

I'd suspect the carburetor is fouled and needs cleaning and rebuilding.
