i just aquired a 1978 16' fiberform boat with a 115 hp evinrude motor. the motor has not run in 20+ years. it has been stored uncovered outside for about 6 years. it looks like its in good shape, overall, what should i do before i try to start the motor. also is there anything else i should look for as far as the boat itself goes before i put it in the water assuming i can get it running. thanks in advance for any information.

I would get as much fogging oil into it as I could, cylinders, crankcase and let it set for a few days before trying to turn it over by hand at first to start things slowly so you don't get any "start-up" scratches in anything. While the oil is soaking in, replace the impeller it's definitly toast, and teardown and clean the carbs they are most likely hard varnished. Take your time and be patient and it'll probably be around another 30 years.

Do a search on the forum using key word "sleeping".
You will find more info than you could imagine.
Good luck.

Yes, search for 'awakening a sleeping outboard' and you will find lots to read. All good of course :)

I'd seriously consider replacing all the fuel lines under the cowling. The stock ones on the 78 engine are not made to handle the alcohol in today's fuels. They will deteriorate the more you run the engine. You don't want a fuel leak. You should look at the fuel tank that came with the engine. It may have deposits at the bottom, including in the pickup.
