I had to go to VA to a safety course. I drove instead of flying. I'm glad I did. Years ago as a kid, I toured with my parents into PA. At that age I didn't really pay attention to the beauty of the land. I must say that it was a very enjoyable trip.

After being in populated areas for a long period of time, I forgot what rural America was all about. I recommend any city dweller to get out of town and explore the rural areas. Rural areas make up the majority of the country that is not experienced by the city folk. The differences in landscapes from state to state is remarkable. Each has it own style of beauty and attractions. The trip has really uplifted my spirit of America. Regardless of our problems,,,,I'm proud to be part of America!..........SS

I live in south central PA but went to college in Erie. I still go back up there about once a year to visit friends. It is indeed a beautiful drive.

Yes, i agree. I used to be a truck driver, been to 36 states, pa is a nice one, except i dont care for the southern cities (or big towns) along i 76 for some reason  other then that its an awesome state. lots of mountains (nothing like utah) and farmland (not like the midwest though). By the way, you wanna see rural? go take a trip across i 80 through wyoming, Now thats rural! Oh, and can you tell your gov in ohio to let trucks go more then 55 besides on the toll road? thanks:)

Several years ago I had work-related classes to take in Philadelphia, and I decided to drive instead of flying as well.

I was lucky enough for it to be October, and the thing I remember about PA was endless rolling hills covered in fall colors--beautiful. Fantastic drive. One of the road trips that really sticks in my memory.

Re: PA is a beautiful state

I was getting some grief about living where I do from an L.A. native recently. Here's what I told him. . .

I have a beautiful 3-bedroom 2-bath home with a huge fenced-in yard, surrounded by parks in a great neighborhood.

I can drive 20 minutes north and be hiking in the mountains, with deer and bears and picking wild blueberries.

I can drive 20 minutes south and go to an NFL game, world-class theaters and museums, and great restaurants.

How much would that home cost me in L.A.? We both decided it would be somewhere between $2mil and $4mil, and there's no way I'd get anywhere in 20 minutes.

I paid $165,000.

I love my litte corner of PA!

Hmmm, thePostMan, you must be in the Alliquippa or Beaver Falls area????

I have had the pleasure of being in a lot of states and there is immense beauty in our 50 United States of America. I think what sets PA apart from others is the diversity of views and opportunities. I am in rural, central PA. 10 miles from the boat launch of a pituresque 30 mile lake loaded with fish. It is a US Army Corp lake with no private land along it (only 2 marinas, some camping and boat launches) so the surrounding areas of the lake are loaded with wildlife.

I am 2 1/2 hours from the ocean, 30 minutes from Penn State University and all the amenities a State University brings to the table, 1.5 hours from the State Capital, 2 hours to Pittsburgh, 5 hours to NYC. Gettysburg Battlefield and many historic areas are close by, and we are 2.5 hours from our nations capital.

Rolling hills, farm land, state parks, etc. Just give a yell if anyone wants to come and visit my neck of the woods. We'll leave a light on for ya ... just make sure you clean up after yourself on the way out!

I do the majority of my driving trips up and down the east coast and usually along I-95.
A few years ago, having driven to Atlanta, GA. from CT., along I-95, I wasn't looking forward the the ride back. I took out the map for an alternative route. I took I-85 to I-77 to I-81 and ended up on I-84. It took a little longer, but what a ride. No stress, big cities and their traffic and no tolls. Beautiful scenery, tall mountains and deep valleys. I'll be doing again I hope.
I can still taste the hot boiled peanuts.

I like it here in Pa. But I agree that there are plenty of great places to see in the US. Having traveled on motorcycle from coast to coast several times, I can tell ya it pays to stay off the interstate and take the back roads the whole way.. It might take a little longer but you really get to see what America is made of. The interstate and main highways are all the same scene, strip malls and big box stores ((boring)). Take a few weeks and go, You'll never regret it.

Re: PA is a beautiful state

I spent a month one summer at a Seminar at Penn State University in State College.

While there, we did all manner of fun things, including boat rides in caves, flying in a glider, etc. It is a beautiful place. We were there the better part of the month of July, and being from Seattle, I was not used to the amount of rain!

The Rathskeller, in State College, was unique, however. They'd serve beer at your table by the case, and you had to keep moving if you were walking around in there. Stand in one place too long in that establishment, you'd struggle to get your shoes unstuck from the floor. In short, my kind of place!

I live on the shore of Lake Erie west of the City of Erie, about 5 miles from the Ohio line. I agree it is beautiful, especially this time of year. But as I grow older, the winters have gone from beauty to ugly!

Nice! You're only off by a few miles. . .Moon Township!

Another funny thing about PA. . .town names. I live in Moon. I can be in Mars in about 30 minutes. And I won't even mention the middle of the state, with Intercourse and Blue Ball.

Ah, Moon. Been there several times. Fly out of the airport some. Have some good friends in Upper Saint Clair and have done some work in West Alliquippa. Nice place you live, for the "City", anyway!
