Greetings. Whats the best way to get out the two screws (top and bottom) to change the oil in the lower unit on a 92 60hp evinrude. They are both flathead screws. I bought the biggest screwdriver I can find but it slips/strips off the screw head. Is there a special tool somewhere, or some technique. Thanks!

You MUST use a "torque" screwdriver as there really is no other way to do the job! Yor place the screw bit in the slot, set it so it will torque the screw off, hold the handle tight and hit the end of the torque screwdriver with a hammer and it come loose just like it was loose already!

You can get one at Sears or any other place where you can buy tools and you most definately don't need the most expensive one they sell. I got mine at Sears for $35 dollars a few years ago so they could have gone up in price, but I ASSURE you it will become one of the most useful tools in your entire toolbox.

In addition, Remove the LOWER screw first when you do the job. there is a "magnet" on the lower screw that is about 1/4" to 1/2" inch long and it will have metal shavings from your lower unit. This is normal. If there are ever "pieces" on the magnet, you got problems! The metal shavings on the magnet are just the regular shavings that come from wear and tear on your lower unit. The magnet catches them all so they don't cause any harm to your lower unit gears.

After you take out the lower screw, screw in the hose for your lower unit lube and attach the lower unit lube to the other end of the hose.

If you take out the TOP screw first, as soon as you take out the LOWER screw, all the fluid leaks out!

After you have your lube hose and lube bottle attached to the lower screw hole, use the torque screwdriver on the upper screw, remove it, squeeze the bottle of lube until it runs out the top hole, put the top screw back in, torque it tight, remove the lube bottle from the lower screw, put the lower screw in and torque it tight and you are done.

Absolutely cannot live without one if you are going to be working on outboards. Just a note on quality...there is some junk out there. You can get some for a few bucks and that is what they are worth. I bought one from Snap-On 50 years ago and it still works like new after daily commercial use for over 20 years. Heck, I suppose even Snap-On is getting theirs from Asia by now, I dunno.

PLEASE don't say that! I recently purchased a sleeve of Craftsman Standard sockets and when I got home, the sticker said the plastic sleeve said it was made in Mexico and the sockets were made in China!!!!!!!

Damn NAFTA!!!!

If you're going to change the oil in the gear case, take out the top screw to vent the gear case and allow the oil to drain before refilling with the procedure above.

If the oil is milky, there's a leak allowing water and oil to mix in there like a blender. Sometimes it's as easy as replacing the drain screw gaskets or you're into replacing seals or checking for a crack in the housing. Even if the oil looks good, replace the screw gaskets with new.

Good Point!

I change my seals everytime I change or top off my fluid weather it needs it or not. An ounce of prevention ....

The only thing we make here anymore is hamburgers! BTW, replace those two screws once you get them out.
