I have an 85 hp. After I did the carbs, I had it idling with the hose/ears at 7-800 rpm. First time in the water, it would stall when I tried engaging Fwd or Rev. What I found out was, the base rpm I had it set on the hose/ears was too low to handle the additional strain of the water pump fully pumping. I had to raise my out of water base rpm to 1000-1100 rpm to get an 7-800 in water idle rpm, which wouldn't stall when engaging the gear. Hope this helps..

lil grady is exactly right with one exception, the reason it dies, is there is backpressure on the exhaust when in the water, there is non when one muffs. idle speed must be fine tuned in the water, and in gear.

Ok so there is no air filter adj the idle it went in gear and ran fine for 15 minutes then quit the starter had a hard time turning the moter over something bound up worked the fly wheel back and forth and it spun free again but then bound up again did that a few times would free up but after turning it over a few times bound up again do you think its worth rebuilding a motor like that its a 1975 75 HP stinger 2

sounds like you ran hot, and partially seize the motor. figure cost of rebuild,vs replacement, you can sell the lower unit, and various parts. donor powerhead would be 73-76 or 77, the shift linkage was different in those years.
