I replaced the coils and cleaned the points on my '60 10 horse, and was able to get it firing on 2 cyls, but not running. While puzzling over it, I realized that after removing and cleaning the carb, I may have been wrong when I re-installed it with the high speed and low speed valves fully seated. Are they supposed to be out so many turns, and then you tweak them with the "lean/rich" settings on the front of the motor? If so, how many turns?

Re: 1960 Johnson 10hp Carburetor question

Thank you, I did that. The problem I have is that the outlined procedure calls for the engine to run while making the adjustments. This engine will not keep running.

the low speed is 11/2 turns out from seat and high is 3/4.that should allow you to get started,if it will run by choking, your carb may still have issues, the passages are small and need a strong solution to loosen any varnish that may be inside passages not seen by eye,omc engine tuner or a carb bath sold at auto stores will do it,get a can of spray carb cleaner to blow through the openinga after the carb is treated with the fore mentioned cleaner

Yes, I have printed, read, re-read, and done what the FAQ says. Thank you.

Now, on to my continuing problem: I understand there is some packing in the valves? Does anyone have any input on how much there should be, where it should be, and if it could result in sucking in air and causing the engine to not sustain running?

Re: 1960 Johnson 10hp Carburetor question

the packing you refer to is the two 7/16 nuts on the shafts for the high and low speed adjustments on the carb. one is on top, one low. they can be tightened. ultumatly, you want them to have resistance to movement so you can set them and viberation wont move them. set high speed first for max rpm -100(by ear is fine) then low speed, with a slight change in rpm. you will have to do this at least 2 times to narrow in on proper settings. fast then slow, again, fast then slow, again, fast then slow. once very close, you can set the knobs to anchor the shafts midway for future use. good luck and boat a lot.

there should be packing around the needle shafts that the nuts tighten down on, to prevent the air leak, and hold the needle in place. should come in carb kit.

Re: 1960 Johnson 10hp Carburetor question

I have what I believe to be a 1960 10 hp Johnson with no carburetor. I am in need of a carburetor and secondly there is no ID plate on the motor. The motor is white with a fiberglass cover. I have seen numerous pictures on the internet and that is how I came to this conclusion. Any help would be appreciated.

Firstly dont hijack another thread. Start your own to ask your question.

The motor ID plate with model number should be on the poert side transom bracket. Difficult to ID without the model number.

Post some photos external and some under the cover. Someone will recognise it.

I have made my own packing using plumbers teflon tape.Take a piece about a foot long, double it back and rollit til its round.Put a couple wraps around the needle behind the packing washer,be sure to cut it evenly, you can always add more.Works for me
