Hey guys,
I'm kinda at my wits end with this one. The trip tab bolt is VERY rounded none of the sockets even fit it let even if I had one that did there are no edges to grip. Closests socket is 3/8s, but it slips. Have tried heat and penetrating bolt buster too. I'm sure that if I could get a grip on it it would come out, but no idea how to do this. Hole is just a bit too small to allow box end or vise grips. Reluctant to drill it out or use easy out..most of the time neither easy nor out. Any suggestions? I don't mind replaced the bolt but I don't want to damage the threads...

Read another post about melting the anode, but I believe it is actually aluminum(very smooth and painted). I don't think i could melt that with a propane torch.

Use a left hand drill bit then replace the bolt.

As you said, those EZ outs are junk, so dont bother with them. I find the left hand bits with a quality penetrating oil work best.

Good luck

Ive had this happen to me the next thing I would try is a 10mm six point snap-on socket you may have to tap it lightly with a hammer to get it on the bolt but it usualy works if the 10mm dosent fit tight enough you my have to use a smaller size. I say Snap-On brand because they are flank drive and they get a better bite.

Good Luck

I just had a busted head bolt in my big twin and I took it to a guy that MIG welded a nut onto it and it turned right out. The heat really freed it up. But yours looks recessed so not sure it it would work but it sure saved me a lot of work.

Geesh I wish some ppl would stop trying to take some of these nuts out improperly, with vice grips and the like! Those little oil lines for the TNT unit are the worst when they are stripped. And expensive too!

If you have a dremmel tool, you can use a carbide cutting bit and cut a slit into the bolt head. Then you have something to put a big fat screw driver into.
Another possibility is to just drill off the the head of the bolt. Then your trim tab will come off and now you have room for a vise grip.

Dremel a slot, then use an impact driver to pop it loose, sears sells the impact driver, the one you tap with a hammer.

If that fails, go to plan B, left hand drill bit.

But I'm certain the impacter will get it out.

Get yourself a torch with MAPP gas.You might try the metric SIX POINT socket trick,6 pt sockets are a must on outboards, otherwise your truly risking stripping.Get that bolt hot as you can, then tap it with a pucnh and hammer a bit,tap on a socket that fits by force ,then begin by tight, then loosen directions a bit at a time

I agree that, if you dremel a slot into the bolt head, you are going to have to use an impact driver. If it is stuck to the point of stripping the bolt head edges, you will never get it out with a standard screwdriver.
