Hi Everyone. I just picked up this Gamefisher motor Model # 217-586752. I know that it was built by Eska. I have two questions which are... I got the motor running in a garbage can filled with water... how much water should be coming out of the upper 2 holes, if any... and what is the purpose of this water pump??? The engine is air cooled. I am new to boating so sorry for sounding dumb. Thanks in advance for your help guys/gals.

The motor itself is air cooled, but the exhaust, therefore exhaust port is water cooled. As for how much water should be coming out, you will find more comes out when it is in gear. If it is spraying out warm water, and not steam, you are likely in good shape. I've seen people run them out of water thinking it was ok because the motor was air cooled and melt the impeller. The motor will overheat without the impeller doing its job, just not as much as a water cooled engine.
If the impeller is old, type your model number in at www3.sears.com to get a parts list. If you are going to be further than rowing distance, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Re: 1985 GameFisher/Sears 7.5HP Water Pump Question

Below is a composite of my answers to a similar question on another board.

Cooling of the exhaust leg is a secondary benefit. The imperative reason for water-cooling was to keep the lower bearing and crankcase seal alive since they are constantly surrounded by the full heat of the exhaust gases.

The finned rectangular casting at the top of the exhaust leg to which the engine is secured is the manifold that gathers and directs the burnt exhaust gases down the leg. The part of the crankcase containing the lower bearing and seal resides inside that exhaust manifold. The waterpump feeds the coolant water into the cavity with the crankcase which is separated from the full brunt of the exhaust by a metallic gasket. That gasket has a rather small hole that allows the water to escape to the leg and thence out after it has been in contact with the crankcase area containing bearing and seal long enough to extract excess heat. Like all good engineering it is a simple but effective means to an end. The fact that it also cools the exhaust leg and prevents burns is a serendipitous secondary benefit that no doubt pleased their attorneys hugely.

The truth of the above was brought forcefully to my attention in the past few months after I was given a very cosmetically nice looking 1970 Chrysler 3.6 HP air & water-cooled outboard. To make a long story short the water intake passages were totally blocked and it had been ran that way so long that the crankshaft and bearings were toast. The heat had even migrated up the rod until the wristpin was as deeply heat blued as a fine firearm. But the AIR-COOLED cylinder, piston and rings amply demonstrated that the engine was very low time since they were in perfect condition with great compression and hone marks still visible in the cylinder although the rest of the motor was garbage. I guess what Tom is trying to say is put your hand behind the hole and if it gets wet the impeller is working..:D

1985 GameFisher/Sears 7.5HP Water Pump Question

im new to this site and i have a 1984 or 5 gamefisher 7.5 outboard its got a water pump and it pumps water just fine. my problem is that its not getting trough the holes in the area around the power head to keep the seals cooled ive found the bolt on the front of the steering neck i can run water through that ho0le and it sends water to the placed it should. should i pull the power heafd off and see if there are any obsticles in the way cause the lady i got it from her son ran it out of water thinkin its air cooled and it shredded the water pump im not sure if any of those pieces got forced somewhere they shouldnt be is it worth looking into or should i stop there the motor runs great im just have a problem with it cooling

thanks and sorry for the long post

Welcome to I boats,
sounds more like you need to pull the lower unit and check there first, if water circulates through the plug in the water jacket "heatsink" but won't come up the water tube it would seem your problem is not up top.

I suggest starting a new thread as well:)

call certified parts corp 1 800-356-0777 and give them your model no. they will be your best friend and best resource

if I had more time I would lookup the merc water impeller part no.from a 9.8 that fits your outboard but theres 2 and I can't find the part no,...its cheaper but I'm tired and you really need to replace the pin as well that holds the impeller, if you ran it to long with out water pumping, you may be looking at changing the lower bearing and seal. Nice winter project.
