85 hp starts and runs only 10-15 miles an hour

I have a 78 chysler 85hp outboard, This 85hp starts every time and when in neutral you can rev the engine up and sounds great, but when you put it in gear it starts missing and will only get up to around 10-15-miles an hour. you can putt around all day this way. I checked the plugs and the #2 plug is wet. Does anyone have any suggestions on what might be the problem?

You would get a lot more help if you put it in the right forum for your outblard. Maybe they can move it there.

If it's a Chrysler, you're in the right spot.

You might want to try changing the fuel filter to see if that helps. Sometimes a problem like you describe won't present itself until the engine is under load. Cleaning out the carb (or carbs), might help too.

I Think your in the right forum!!!

Perform compression test on each cylinder. They should be around 100 psi to 130 psi and and be within a range of 10 to 15 psi of each other. Buy a good compression tester ( need 2 people) pull plugs on all 3 cylinders and test each cylinder, turn over ignition and open throttle all the way.

Perform a spark test on each cylinder. The old screw driver against block.( 2 people)

Sounds like your down 1 or 2 cylinders.
