1978 merc 90 tach question

I want to get a tach for my motor wondering what to buy, how many poles plus what to set it to thanks

I'm a little curious about this poles thing too... I'm looking at some that say 4/6/8/12 pole outboards. <stupid> what's a pole? </stupid>

The poles are post that hold the alternator windings your engine is a 12 pole, 6 pulse engine, the tach instructions will tell you were to set it.
