First of all, thank you to all the good people who've helped me as I've read many postings to get me where I am with this project.

This motor, model QD-23R, came to me after being in the garage of an old house for many untold years. At first I could only get it to sputter. I proceeded down the list by reading these wonderful postings. The compression was good, the carb was not. I rebuilt the carb and subsequently ended up replacing the fuel pump which was leaking past the diaphram. Rather than replacing the fuel filter element (the one in the glass bowl), I tore out the remaining fragments and replaced the freshly cleaned bowl, so that I could maintain a seperation factor. I then added an aftermarket in-line filter.

I moved then to the lower unit. There was no sign of water and the lube was still lube. I disassembled, inspected and cleaned the lower unit and replaced the seals. That par was easy.

Then came the fun. I had good spark on my initial tests, so I failed to consider the ignition system (my mistake). I got the motor running for about two minutes, albeit very poorly. I proceeded to pull that rope until both hands were blistered. I pulled the carb off to recheck the float setting, and pulled some more. By this time it had cooled off and it ran again, for another (you guessed it) two minutes. Only at that point, while I had the plugs out to look for fouling or dry plugs, did I decide to check for ignition. Sure enough, I had lost spark on #1. Further inspection revealed coils and points that looked like they had beed through a nuclear blast. I can not believe the motor ran at all. I'm sorry I took no pics, but the looked worse that the ones on Tom's web site. A great place to set up your older seahorse. I ordered points, condensors, and coils for both cylinders. I bought 7mm solid core wire, new ends, boots, and plugs. Using tom's information I got the motor running pretty well in a can,

Sorry if I rambled too much there, but I'm starting to feel pretty good about this project and wanted to share. Now for the questions.

1) Tom's article shows me how to set the points for perfect timing, but it does not say where to set the advance disc. There's a mark on the piece that hits the throttle wheel, but I think that's for setting up the throttle plate. Anyone familliar with what I'm trying to say here?

2) How can I be sure the impeller is not installed backwards? It blows watter out of the exhaust as well as a hole about half way up the shaft.

3) What is the correct mix and type of oil to be used in the gas.

4) Does this motor have a thermostat or some other device for temprature regulation? Should I inspect it or leave well enough alone?

Again, thank you to all of the people who keep this knowledge Base alive, poster's and postee's alike. :D

fuel mix 24-1 TC-W3 outboard motor oil. the impellers will usually right themselves, and your is pumping correctly. it does have a tstat, circled in red.

Thanks for the reply 'Tashasdaddy'. Should I worry about replacing it seeing as it is pumping water.

Does anyone have more information about adjusting the timing and where to set the advance disc?

Hi Lefty,
If you have not replaced the impeller, do it now. It is cheap insurance and not terribly difficult to do.
