I have been trying to get my outboard running again. It hasn't been used for about 2 years. I checked and cleaned everything and then tried it but it wouldn't start. Found out that one of the spark plug connections was faulty so i replaced both leads and got new spark plugs. Then I tried it today and it backfired a few times but still won't start. I had gotten new fuel for it but forgot there would be still some of the old fuel in the fuel line. Would this cause it not to start? Anyone got any ideas? Thanks

Re: 1984 Evinrude 60hp Starting trouble

No I didn't dismantle the carbs just removed the bowl drain plug and flushed out the dirt, I cleaned the fuel filter in the fuel pump, new spark plugs, etc. I removed the plugs after trying to start yesterday and they were wet so I'm guessing the carbs and fuel system is working. Is there any way of checking that a spark plug is sparking correctly? Are the plug leads high resistance rather than conductors?

did you use outboard wire for the plugs, auto wire will not hold up.
cleaning the bowl, does nothing for the real parts of the carbs. the jets. your spark should be bright blue, and jump a gap of atleast 1/2 inch, auto parts store sell, adjustable spark testers. have you checked your compression?
