Flooding Carb on a 1956 3HP Evinrude

I bought this 1956 3hp Evinrude Fastwin about 3 years ago and it was running good when purchased. I haven't used for about 2 years now. It wouldn't start. I reset the points, rebuilt the carbs and changed the head gasket on it. It runs but for a short period and than the carb floods. It does take a bit of pulling to get it started.

I am wondering what would cause the carburator to flood?

Any help is appreciated

thanks

Sounds like the float and/or needle valve is sticking in the carb. Try taking it off and cleaning it again. Also, clean out the metal fuel line to make sure there is no crud in it, either. That motor should only take 3 or 4 pulls max to start, if everything's right.

By needle valve you mean the valve controlled by the float? I have a really good flow through on the fuel line from the tank to carb.

I have readjusted the float a few times. I was still getting the flooding problem when I adjusted it so that there was only about a quarter inch of fuel where the float control is.

The float should be adjusted so that it is parallel to the carb body when held upside down. If it floods (overflows) with the float adjusted correctly, it is either a heavy float (absorbed gas) or a worn float needle and seat. In either case the repair is obvious...replace them. The new replacement floats are made of an improved material so alcohol won't attack them.

I hope you are talking about true flooding (overflowing) and not just wet plugs. The latter suggests an ignition problem or improperly adjusted mixture knobs.

Re: Flooding Carb on a 1956 3HP Evinrude

I used a new rebuild kit and it came with a new float and valve.

The only thing wrong with those instructions is that I also have a high speed valve in addition to the low speed. How do I adjust both? The boat won't start (even for a few seconds) without the high speed valve turned on.

This is the carb flooding, and not flooding in the cylinders. I will try adjusting the float so when it is upsidedown it is parallel to the carb body.

It isn't flooding when it is just sitting. I have to pull the cord several times before fuel starts coming out of the carb.

Thanks everyone for your help I was able to get it running.

I had a little bit of debree in the line going to the low speed adjustment and my float turned out to be about 3-4 mm off. this little motor is starting with the first pull now.

Thanks again for all your help.
