water pump peeing

Hey guys I just recently got a boat that has a 1980 Johnson 25 seahorse. It is tiller steer with an electric starter and a pull start. I haven't put it in the water yet because it sat for about three years. I have run it in a tub of water and my buddy says that it "pees" when it is in gear but I don't see anything coming from the outlet on the side of the head. Should I go ahead and drop the lower unit, and replace the water pump and gaskets? Also does this motor charge the battery as it is running or do I need to charge it before and after each use? any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: water pump peeing

I have checked the FAQs really didn't address my particular question other than replace the impellar or water pump assembly. that's fine I have one on order but what about the outlet on the side of the head. what kind of flow should that have?

Any motor you plan on running and maintaining you SHOULD GET A MANUAL of some type unless you have a signifigant knowledge base from experiance. As recommended in the FAQ you said you read but didn't think it applied, looks like it does. It would be nice if we could just sit back and have everything spoon fed to us and never have to make ay effort to obtain the info we need. Lecture over, now.

You risk overheating damage if you run it too hot. An impeller is cheap insurance and great for piece of mind and make sure your water pump is working okay. It takes a few minutes at idle to get warm enough to open the thermostat for the water to start out the exhaust relief (pee hole). Normaly it should run over 125deg but anything over 163deg is too hot.

my 1991 25hp and 1977 115hp both had a tick constant pee stream weather or not the thermo was open.

you could have a restriction in the pee hose, or a bad impeller . or one of the dry-old impeller blade broke off and is now stuck up inside your cooling passages, thats possible. (also why we always change the impeller on unknown condition/used outboards)

To answer question b. It should charge the battery assuming the alt stat coils and rec diode are working properly but i'm just a Cadet, what do I know.

Be carefull when looking for obstructions. I have a 76 35hp jonsn that overheated and when I pulled the head to inspect I had an AHA moment there was what looked like a piece of hose stuck in the cooling pasage. I yanked it out and somewhere in the IPB in the manual there was a "water deflector" so I stuck it back where it belonged.

Interesting you have a pee stream all the time. My 76 has an air bleed hole but no significant stream untill the thermo opens. The first tme I cranked it up on the water I ran it for a couple of minutes and there was no stream so I panicked and shut it down and took it back home. wasn't untill later I found out it needed to warm up before it started up. I also have an 75 40hp 'rude that has no thermostat.
