I've just seen an evinrude 25 hp outboard for sale, and this seems to fit the bill for size I'm looking for. Only problem is that A) "the gear oil has emulsified" and I've no idea what this means, nor how much money or trouble it will be to get it sorted. And B) it has no spark.
Any ideas, and would this be worth my while buying. Worked with lots of engines but not outboards...
Cheers, Martin

Re: Outboard repair advice

What year is the outboard?
"emulsified gear oil" means that there is a leak in the lower gear unit. That could be as simple as replacing the 20 cent O-rings on the filler screws. Or the seals could be shot.
The "no spark" cost depends on the year of the outboard. Old ones with coils and points are pretty simple to fix. Newer ones with power packs and electronics can get expensive to fix.

I'm not sure about emulsification, but here in Maine we call it "moose milk" in the lower unit. If water can leak into the lower unit, the oil will froth giving a milky appearance. It could be something inexpensive like a gasket, or it could be something expensive like a bent prop shaft. Proceed with caution.

Thats cheap, less than $200 USD.
Around here thats the price of a parts engine,
non running but fixable or use for parts.

If you find one without issues, "starts first time" you'd be paying quite a bit more....but if you are handy with a wrench and service manual.?
