I have a 1983 OMC 3.8 litre inboard that dies out when it is idling. It is a little hard to start but I think that is because of the choke. When it starts it idles rough and it seems that it just needs the idle adjusted. Here are the ser and model #'s

Model # J170STMRCIF
Serial # J 730991

Please help
Thanks,

Do you have an electric choke or manual?Make sure it's adjusted right or it won't ever start right.
The motor needs to be warm when this is done.
Start it and turn the left air screw out until it runs smooth.then do the same on the right.
Then turn them back in until it runs rough then out again till it smooths out then 1/2 turn more .Do this on both screws. If you only have 1 screw then do that with it.Jerry

It is an electric choke. It has the dial where it reads lean or rich. I had to lean it out as it was not opening fast enough and would flood the carb. As for the carb, I only see one screw that is at located in the front towards the bottom. Thanks for your reply, I have never owned my own boat before so I am learning as I go. I think I got a good deal, paid $1400.00 1983 Glastron:

That jerry is is good. Someone put electric choke on it. Didn't come stock that way.

I was gonna put one on my boat but mine runs good the way it is.

Good luck
