Run fuel out of a Yamaha 25h 4 stroke

Question

I have a 2006 Yamaha 25hp 4 stroke due to surgery two weeks ago and the Dr. tell me I won't be doing much fishing for 4-6 month I have this question.

The outboard has a connection to hookup a garden hose. Can I run the motor out of fuel using that connection? I'm not sure if the motor should run while connected to it? I have some friends that are willing to help put the boats up for the winter.

I think the connection you are talking about is to flush the lower unit and is not intended for running the motor with a garden hose. If you want to run the motor with a garden hose get you a pair of ear muffs.

As far as running the engine out of fuel, I personally do not think it is a good idea. One reason is that the tank will go empty before the engine stops running. This means that your pickup line is still sucking and will suck up all the dirt an debris that is inside your tank. The second reason is, seals and hoses will dry out and over time will start to leak.

The best thing to do is fill the gas tank and add sta-bil. Filling the tank will limit the space that condensation has to form. Then run the engine so that the sta-bil treaded gas gets completely through the fuel system.

Hi

Hook up the garden hose and see if water comes out the pee tube, if it does then the block is full of water and you can run it. You only need to flush the engine with fresh water if you ran it in salt water. Long term storage is a separate issue, most of the worry is fuel oxidation in the carb and condensation in the engine. You can spray a storage seal spray directly into the intake or into the carbs on most engines if you remove the air box first. This just coats everything inside with oil. You can drain the carbs and filters usually with a screw on the float bowl, or filter, or unscrew the filter and dump it.

The hose hookup you are referring to is intended to flush your motor. It's how I flush mine after use in salt water. I have a Yamaha 15hp 4 stroke.

why not simply drain the carb using the fuel bowl drain?
you wont ever run the carb dry,maybe low enough on fuel to shut the engine down but that last 1/4" in the bottom of the bowl will turn to goo.
you may also wish to pick up some crankcase store-N-start to aide in protecting other engine shiney parts such as camshafts,followers and cylinderwalls and such.
what your trying to accomplish is keeping the fuel system and the engine shiney parts from oxidizing.
