The last 18 was the FD-19, 1965. However, it actually continued on with the FD-20 in 1966 which was 20hp.
Good motors if in good condition. A parts motor if junk. After 40 years, it could be either. It would have to be VERY good for me to give $400. But I'm cheap.

Half that, the gaskets are likely dry and the carbs varnished, the parts could be a real bear to get ahold of.

If the motor is demonstrated as good running and needing NOTHING, then it is worth the $400. Sitting for two years, the impeller is likely in need of replacing. Good chance the carb is gummed up.

Has there ever been a used outboard that didn't "run good the last time it was started"???? If the owner can't demonstrate it to run, it probably doesn't. If you can't take it out on the lake and see if it'll hold gear, then that's another worry. If it has no water in the lower unit and has good compression, I might consider 300 if it looked really nice. Actually, now that I have one, I wouldn't pay that much anymore but have paid that much before. $400 for a 50 year old motor that you haven't seen run is too much to me.

The 18 was produced by Johnson from 1957-1965, then rerated to 20 horses 1966-1973. Evinrude didn't see the need to rerate it so they continued to sell their version as an 18 through 1973.

The 20 came back in Canada-only, as both a Johnson and an Evinrude for 1975 and continued through the next generation into the 1980s at least.

The advice that other previous posters have given sounds like very good advice.

if it has good compression and the lower unit is good, it thats $200-250 in parts to make it reliable. points, condensers, coils, wire, impeller, carb kit. so if it is in great running condition, it could be worth $400, or buy on for $200 and put $200 into it. it is hard to get a good motor any more, for less than $400, even the smaller ones.
