Hey guys, we recently brought back my 1986 dixie with a 140 mercruiser I/O from the dead and it is running incredibly now. We checked the oil and the dipstick was clean but the oil was old so we decided to change it, we ran the engine for about 5 minutes and then started to pump it out and it was a big milkshake, we only pumped out a tiny bit but i stopped figuring that it was a waste of time. Is there anything else that it could have been other than a hole that blew in the block letting water into the oil? any suggestions on things to try or am i in the market for a new engine? thanks guys -Matt

Re: Water in my oil

Greetings,
I'm new to the forum and thought this could be my first post.

Water in the oil is "normally" the result of one of two things. You mentioned the first though that is the extreme. The other is just a bad head gasket.

On the other hand, there may have just been quite a bit of water/moisture in the bottom of your oil pan that once it was ran turned into said milkshake.
I've seen that before with vehicles stored for long periods of time outdoors etc..

I would recommend a compression check - both for cylinder pressure from engine rotation and then pressurize each cylinder (via adapter through the spark plug hole) with about 30psi from an air compressor to see how much hissing of air you hear in/from the oil filler cap.

If things look relatively good, change your oil and stroke her up again.

Good luck

Pump out ALL the old oil and change it. Run the engine at idle up to operating temp. Shut it down, change it again. Run it to operating temp again. If it still has water in it, you have a water intrusion problem. Do all of this with the engine on a water supply, by the way. Don't run it dry or you'll burn things up. Head gaskets, risers or a crack in the block are common issues if you still find water.

Mine sat for 2 years. Previous owner burned the exhaust flappers out and got water in the engine. I had to change my oil 3 times to get all the water out.

Question? You have a dipstick and a pumpout tube with a screw on cap on that motor?

If yes, Check that tube all the way to the drain plug. Could have cracked off the plug.

If water was over that plug in the bilge than water could get in there that way into your oil pan.

Happened to me.

Solution: 1- Replace that plug with a regular drain plug.

2- What i did was plug the hole with solder. Never a drop leaked.
