We have a i/o late model 1976 mercruser with a 302 ford 188 horsepower engine. We found a leak in the "up" trim hose and determind that it needs to be replaced. However, we followed the hose as far back as we could -with our hands and realized we can't find where the hose ends. It seems like it is going towards the outboard. In any case, has anyone changed the trim hoses if so could you offer some advice?

Re: HOw to replace trim hoses

i have no advise..... yet...
i think i have the same issue with my 165 L6. don't know what year yours is, but i can get a wrench on my up hose at the trim resivouier. don't know about the down yet. anyways. there's a block at the base of the gimble housing. very bottom, where the trim ram hoses connect. with luck, for you and me both i hope. this block can be removed. the side ya can't see has the up and down hose coming from the trim resivouir down and through the transom to this block. i'm hopeing that droping the block will access the other end of the hoses comeing from the resivour allowing me to unscrew both ends. i plan on chaseing the old out with the new, and reconnecting... time will tell for both of us as to weather what i say is a fact or not..... that's my plan at this point.....

Is the transom assy. the area outside the boat where the trim hoses go from the cylanders to the back of the boat. If so, can I unscrew the 2 nuts to get the trim hoses off?

We had the same idea, but was hoping to learn from someone else. Our plan is to tackle what you and we have come up with. We will keep you posted. Thanks. Scott and Roberta

Re: HOw to replace trim hoses

i've had 2 165's. the last one i took this block where the trim ram hoses connect at off the gimble assy. can't remember why i did that. but, i'm just sure what i saw was the other end of the hoses comeing from the trim resivoiour. i hope i'm right.... i'm gonna live with my leak till the end of summer i think. it ain't that bad, yet. i think mines a hose leak. :( wish it'd have been a connection..... i'm gonna look again. but that's where i think i'm at..... hosed..... it always happens ya know when yer dealing with hose....

If it's an MC-1 drive, the trim hoses terminate at that manifold block on the bottom of the gimble housing. The block is held on by two nuts on studs embedded into the housing. Removing the nuts should let you pull the block down far enough to remove the hoses by unscrewing the compression fittings.

You can pull the hoses partway out of the boat if you have slack by pulling down and rotating the block forward (pretend the block is hinged on the forward edge).. the last section of the hose is a 90 degree angle and isn't flexible, so this will let you get the end part out of the housing.

You'll need a replacement gasket for the block.

Once you disconnect the hose you'll need to thread a new hose down to the transom and out the hole that block plugs. Once you've done that you can reconnect the compression fittings, install the new gasket, connect the hose at the other end and you should be good to go.
