Got back from a 911 call a couple hours ago - deer v. motorcycle. The motorcyclist was transported to the hospital where he is probably now in surgery to repair some badly broken bones. The deer, a very nice 8 pt in velvet, had to be shot by the State Police (it took 4 shots at close range to finish the deer off - 2 in the neck and one in the head ... I wouldn't want that ammo for protection!)

Be careful out there, the deer are starting to become a little more active ...

Re: Deer v. Motorcycle

I hate to hear stories like that. Hope the guy pulls through. Had a big fat doe leap out in front of my bike last Thursday evening. It was a close one. Not as close as the one back in 1988 that I T-boned on a bike. It was ugly, the deer died and I didn't so it could have been worse. Also had one smack into my bike in the early 90's. but that one was not real bad. My biggest fear when on the bikes is deer and other critters.

I have noticed an increase in deer movement already this year also.

With all the rain..... there is feed everywhere. Only on the rare chance you do see one they are often far from the roads....... now the moose on the otherhand have been moving!

Yeah, I hate stories like that also ... he was riding an older Kawie 650 ... nice shape. Broke the turn signal and head light and bent up the front fender, but other than that bike faired the best of all.

Ran over a squirrel once and that about threw me for a loop! Critters & cycles ain't fun, that is for sure!

That's about right, even at close range they can't put all 4 rounds on target.

Re: Deer v. Motorcycle

Had a doe with twins visiting The Hideout regularly the past few weeks.

Saturday one of the fawns came tearing up my drive in a panic. . .couldn't find mom. (S)he tore around a while, then took off into the woods headed toward the nearest highway.

This morning I found her on the highway. Road kill. :(

Hate that. The only coyote I have killed here was trying to get at a fawn that its mom was defending. It gets worse. The coyote was a lactating mother. :(

Thats one reason I got rid of my bike last year, in my private community the deer are rampant, and with people feeding them, they are almost domesticating them  then they either just mosey across the road, one, or more, at a time, or try to fly over it  I've actually had a few try and race along side my car just to jump in front of it, to get to the other side of the road  Plus, lately we have the bambi's who are worse then toddlers, bounding anywhere, at anytime!

Re: Deer v. Motorcycle

I know hitting a deer on a motorcycle is not any fun. I hit one 15 years ago on my CB750C Honda, I still suffer from the injuries today. Hit the deer broadside, cut it into. They scraped me up out of the ditch aproximately 480 yards from the point of impact, the bike slid 520 yards after hiting the deer, needless to say SPEED was involved. Both the bike and I lived to ride again.

Do it right and the animal dies quickly.

If the deer were still concious there's a good chance it would be quite agitated and was squirming around and trying to get up/flee from the trooper. Under those circumstances it wouldn't necessarily be particularly easy to make a clean shot to immediately stop the deers suffering.

Actually, it was a typo ... brain working faster than fingers. It should have read 2 in the neck and 2 in the head. The deer was trying to get up (pelvis broken) and moving a good bit. First shot high on the neck, second shot center mass of neck. Deer still trying to get up, third to the side of head. Trooper walked away and deer tried to get up again ... between the eyes and it was over. I wa actually impressed with the troopers marksmanship under the circumstances, but not so impressed with the bullet performance - 9mm or .40 cal, not sure which.

Never hit anything with fur or feathers while riding my bikes. Hit some huge bugs, though. They hurt even through leathers.

Dad hit one on a sport bike about 20 years ago. He rode home, whereas the deer didn't.....

Figures. I set in a tree for 8 hours, full camo, scent blocker, bleeting away with a call to get one within 400 yards and the little turd spots me raising my rifle and scrams...

Meanwhile, across the hill, an 18 wheeler driver is laying on the horn, lights flashing, all 18 wheels screeching and the stupid things are standing in line to jump out in front of him.

Maybe I'd have better luck running through the woods wearing a Hawiian shirt with a q-beam on my head.:D

Re: Deer v. Motorcycle

We had a guy hit a deer right in front of our house about 2 yrs ago.

We live on one of the main streets in out town with a one block empty lot right across the road. There have been deer living in there ever since we moved in 10+yrs ago. They stay in the lot during the day, then come out to plunder flower and veggie gardens at night. I see them all the time going in when I get up for work, and coming out just at/after dark.

One nice summer evening just at dusk we heard a short screech and a crunch-tinkle out front. Looked outside and there was a bike on it's side in the middle of the street, a deer twitching and bleating on the sidewalk, and a guy in a leather jacket sitting on my neighbors front lawn! The neighbors called the ambulance and took care of the guy while I helped pull the bike to the side of the road.

The deer was still twitching and bleating (it didn't look too bad, but couldn't stand and had blood frothing around it's mouth.) so I grabbed a large hammer and put it out of it's misery. By that time there was a small crowd of people standing around commenting on the poor deer and how it was suffering and some one should do something, but when I dispatched the poor thing they looked at me like I was some kind of barbarian and how it would have been better to wait for the police come and shoot it?!?! (Which was in about another 15min or so, and they wouldn't have shot it anyway because of all the people and houses around.)

Ended up talking to the rider who was just a little banged up (<50km/hr impact) and turned out he was the DRIVER EXAMINER coming into town to do a bunch of testing the next day!

Been there. Done that. I hit a deer 4 summers ago going about 55 mph. I got lucky and kept the bike up.

LOL! The NEW camo. is a Peterbilt hat and a flannel shirt. Deer blinds are now at Rest Stops. and exit on ramps. Overpasses are by "permit" only.
