I have a 1975 johnson 135 jet. I recently replaced the water pump and must have done something wrong because i later took it off and found the housing melted and the impeller plate mangled. I noticed the there were groves worn in the drive shaft (not sure if they were there before) and i was wondering if i need to replace the drive shaft or will it be alright or cause more damage using it with the groves worn in it. I placed another housing on and it didnt seem fit fairly snug. Please help. Thanks

Re: groves worn in drive shaft from water pump

Drive shaft replacement would be a real adventure.

If the grommet is riding on the grooves, it's a pretty good chance you'll lose water pressure. But if they're, say inside the housing covered by the impeller, I think I'd go for it. Don't guess you have a pressure gauge?

It just occurred to me -- you didn't say, so I need to ask -- you didn't by any chance start and run the engine without supplying water to the lower unit, did you? If you did, you'd be doing a valuable service by taking a few photos of the damage and posting 'em here, for the benefit of those who come after you.

I dont have a pressure gauge that i know of. What would it take to test that it is holding the correct pressure? Is it normal for groves to be worn in the drive shaft? I was thinking about taking the drive shaft into a machine shop and see if they could fill and re-lathe it do you think that would work?
