Mercruiser 140 I/O Intermediate Shift Shaft Noise

I recently installed the outdrive on my 1978 Century and thought all went well. However, when I put the boat in gear and manually turn the prop, the prop will stop one direction (when engaged by the engine) and will "click" when rotated the other way. The sound is coming from the intermediate shift shaft from the lower unit. When I rotate the prop, I can feel tension on the shift shaft as it tries to rotate with the prop (but is contrained by the horeshoe collar mounted on the lower end of the bell housing). I don't recall ever hearing this noise before. Did I do something wrong? It is possible that the shift shaft may not have been completely in the forward position (forward gear) upon install, but it is defintely seated in the horseshoe collar of the bell housing. I have been told that the noise emanates from the gears in the outdrive not being fully engaged and that the sound should dissipate under power. When in neutral, the prop spins freely with no noise in both directions. Please advise. I do not want to start the engine until I have a better understanding of what is happening. Thanks.

Ayuh,....

When In Gear, whether forward, or reverse,....
The Prop should Lock Up in 1 direction,+ Racket in the Other direction....

Re: Mercruiser 140 I/O Intermediate Shift Shaft Noise

Well, I got my rebuilt 140 started, but I can't seem to get it to idle down. It idles at approx. 2500 rpm even after it has warmed up. The carb has been professionally rebuilt, so I don't think it's a carb problem. I have been told that the most likely culprit is a vacuum leak. I have replaced the carb base plate gasket and have sprayed chem-tool around the intake / exhaust manifold (to see if the engine picks up) but haven't noticed a difference. The int / ex manifold was pressure tested at the machine shop so I don't think it's cracked. Does any have any other ideas as to what the problem might be?

Re: Mercruiser 140 I/O Intermediate Shift Shaft Noise

We're on the same page. I am going to take the carb off my '66 Chevelle and try it (temporarily) to rule out the rebuilt carb. After that, I will take the int / ex manifold back off and check the gasket. It seems to me that the leak must be coming from either the carb or manifold assemblies. I don't see where I could have a leak from the engine itself...

p.s. Throttle linkage is disengaged.

One last thing, if I choke the air off at the carb air horn, I can get the engine to idle down. Does that mean anything?
