Is anyone in Virginia who knows how to re-wire the steering wheel to outboard motor? Mine needs replacing and I don't want to mess it all up. So if someone could help me and I'd pay them for it. How much does it normally cost for a mechanic to just run a fresh wire in and hook it up?

Are you talking about the cable from the steering wheel to the motor?

If so you need to figure out if it is the cable or the motor that isn't turning, it is really easy to do.

Just disconnect the steering cable from the motor, if the motor turns back and forth easily it is the cable if not get some grease in the motor.

If you have the "wire rope" and pulley steering system, and the plastic coating on the wire rope is cracked, the wire rope needs to be replaced. The pulleys need to be inspected carefully, and all of the connection fittings to the hull need to be inspected and tightened or replaced.
This type of steering is fine if maintained, but can be dangerous if it breaks.
My whaler still uses a wire rope and pulley system, and its been fine for over 40 years, but the wire rope has been replaced 6 or 7 times, and none of the connection fittings are original, having been replaced by stainless long ago.

If it's a Teleflex single cable type system, ignore everything I just said :)
