I just bought a boat and when I got it home a and cleaning it up I noticed a white/yellow liquid coming from the out drive and running down the skeg. I know very little about the workings of the out drive and was wondering if I could get some insight into what this might be and how to fix it, if I can do it myself or if I need to take it in. I am not sure about the outdrive, I believe it is a volvo penta 270. If anyone can shed a little light on this for me it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance

Gear oil mixed with water. If you are a mechanic and have a manual, do a leak test. Pump the out drive with 10 pounds of air will tell you where your leaking.

Sir: next time you post please post year, motor #'s, and any #'s on drive. Maybe someone will post the online manual if one is available.

Welcome aboard! And good luck.

If it is starting from just above the skeg then it could be the drain plug o-ring is gone or failing. The drain plug is towards the front of the drive on the bottom side of the bullit shaped chamber that the prop shaft is in.

Wipe it down above and below and try to determine where it starts.

Re: White/yellow liquid coming from outdrive

I guess the first question should be if it's an "oily" type of liquid etc.. If it's actually drive oil it will smell like gear oil/ old 90 weight etc..

I know guys it's wishful thinking but it could just be strange/rusted water coming out of the inlet.... However, does sound like an outdrive "milkshake".

I'm not an outdrive expert Josh, but give the guys a few more details and they will point you in the right direction. However, don't run the boat until you have remedied both leak and changed to new drive fluid etc..

Good luck
