I've got a 1983 Evinrude 35hp. With the setup I have, how do I connect the controls to the motor? I'm pretty sure on the steering... I was going to mount the control bar through the splashwell with a boot, and if I'm correct the control arm bolts through the center hole on the front crosscar right? But the throttle and clutch I'm at a bit of a loss...For more pics heres the link to my resto thread... http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=246184&page=5

Re: Control hook-ups?

You have a tiller outboard so a conversion back to remote controls is required. Your best bet is to go to a local dealer and look at remote control motor. Then check your motor to see if any of the brackets are present and if the linkage will accept remote controls. Just so you know, there is no clutch control. Throttle and shift are integreated into a single lever control box and are operated with two cables.

My bad, Thats what I was trying to think of! Not "clutch", "shift" lever....I knew clutch looked wrong..lol... Anyway, I had planned on using a binnacle mount twin lever. Which one would you reccommend for my setup?

Whether you use a binnacle mount or side mount depends on where the control will be mounted. If you have a center console, perhaps a binnacle mount is best. I can't tell from the picture how your console is set up (or even if you have one) so I can't begin to suggest whether a side mount will work. As for single or dual lever, I strongly suggest a single lever control for either type.

Re: Control hook-ups?

Silvertip- I would also like to just have a single lever control... And I'm still pretty new to control hookups, but how do I attach a single lever binnacle mount to my motor? If it only has the one lever, how does it perform both functions? (throttle and shifting) And yea I do have a center console, sorry I should have included that in my pics, if you look over my thread I believe it shows it somewhere. Thanks!!
TD- Will that conn. kit work for my motor? Its an 83' that says its for a 73'-78'... If it will I'll order it right now, I just need to make sure! Thanks for takin the time to show me where to connect it!!!!!

Re: Control hook-ups?

Even though the control box has one lever, it still has two cables. When you move the lever forward, the first thing that happens is the shift cable moves to shift into forward gear. As you continue to move the lever forward the throttle begins to open. Same happens in reverse. Neutral on a single lever control box is when the lever is straight up. A single lever box generally has a separate fast idle lever that you can raise to allow a fast idle during initial warm up. You cannot connect remote controls to your engine unless you have the proper brackets on the engine. That's why I suggested you go to a dealer and look at one that is set up for remote controls. You also need an electrical harness that runs between the control box and the engine and the harness on the engine will likely be different as well. I know this is not what you want to hear but converting from tiller to remote or remote to tiller is not an inexpensive task.

TD- Thanks bud, I'll order the adapter kit from them. May be able to pick it up locally...THANKS!

Silvertip- You da man! That explanation made so much more sense than what I was thinkin of! And trust me I know this isnt gonna be a cheap upgrade! I would much rather have a single lever control!! I was just steered toward a dual lever cause I was told that was all I could use...THANKS!

I'll get back to you guys in my resto thread and let you know how the hook-up goes! Thanks again!!
