Electric Choke

I just purchased a pontoon with a 95 Johnson 28HP motor. It has an electric choke. The previous owner told me to just hold the switch until it clicks a couple times and then start. He told me not to hold the switch. Is this correct?

How do these work? Does it stay on for so long and then turn off?

Re: Electric Choke

your motor does not have a choke, a choke is a plate in the carb, that closes, to cut off air flow, and enrich the fuel ratio. you have a primer solenoid, it is connect to the fuel line. it is activated, buy turning the key to the on position, and pushing in on the key. at this time in inject fuel into the intake manifold, giving the motor the extra fuel it needs to start when cold. the red handle should be in the postion, in the picture, center over the solenoid.

Turn the key on, push it in and hold it in while turning the key the rest of the way to crank the motor. That's what the owner's manuals say, and that's the way it works. Just clicking it does very little, if anything.

Re: Electric Choke

Thanks, Im learning already!! I am used to 4 cycle engines. This is all new to me.

I dont push in the key, but rather have a small momentary switch next to the key. Im guessing this serves the same purpose as pushing in on the key.

Thanks!! Just what I needed!

I need to order the manuals, just had a chance yet. I read your carb rebuild thread.....thinking I may give it a try! Whats the worst I could do?!?
