Hi All im new to this site and im after some pointers regarding the outboard in question. My line of work is mechanical engineering and I like playing with cars so ive got some basic knowledge of what?s going on, but im a boating virgin! So I apologise in advance for any basic questions!

Ill give a brief intro on how ive come about it.

My friend bought a speedboat (Sims Super V) about 7 years ago with all good intentions! It made the water once and that was it! It?s been sitting in a garage ever since.

Basically we want to fully restore the boat and engine (if possible)

Overall the boat is fine, just some minor aesthetic details.

The trailer has seen better days, so we are going to make a new one (my friend is a welder).

Regarding the outboard, is there a manual I can get for it like a Bentley or Haines equivalent?

Im worried about starting it up for the first time as its been sitting for so long, can anyone give me any tips i.e. taking spark plugs out and oiling bores etc

Has anyone had any direct experience with this engine are they easy to work on, can they be stripped down and re-built without to much fuss? Because if I was being honest id rather go down that route.

Are they re-liable? Are there any common faults and things I should look for?

I found the serial number on it which is B7668437 I couldn?t really make out anything else as it was dark. What will the serial number tell me?

Thanks in advance

Kind regards

Carl

Re: Johnston 70 VRO

welcome to iboats. we need the model #, to get the year. the original reprints of the Johnson/Evinrude manual are available, and the best to work with, the aftermarkets are vague. the 70 Johnson is pound for pound one of the best motors on the market.

while you are waiting put some marvel mystery oil in the cylinders, tilt the motor up, and let the rings soak, 3 or 4 days. then lower the motor, catch the excess oil. drape a towel over the head, with the plugs out, rotate the flywheel, feel for any hard spots. should turn relatively freely. if turning freely, you can now use the starter, do a compression check, can be done dry, no need to wot throttle, should be 100+ psi, but with in 10% of each other. now check spark and all three, should jump 7/16 inch. if fuel was left in the carbs a soaking and rebuild kits. it does not have adjustable jets.
before running for any time, service the water pump.

post the model # and we will get you the correct manual.

Re: Johnston 70 VRO

There's a good section in the FAQ on this subject:
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=158086

The number you want to get off the engine is the model number. It should be on a metal tag on the transom mounting bracket. From it you will know the year and features of that engine. It will probably start with "J70". Also, with the model number you can go to http://www.outboardbooks.com/ (ken cook company) and order the OEM service and owner's manuals for that particular engine. They are not cheap, but you really can't find them cheaper anywhere else, unless you happen to find it on ebay.

J70TLCOS maybe? That's a 1985 model. Should have 3 plates covering the exhaust side of the block. A thin plate next to the block, a thick plate and a thin cover.

If it only has a thin cover plate we don't have it figured out yet.
