Honda 100 10hp CDI 4 Stroke Outboard Charger?

Hi all...
Just joined the forum and just got my first 22ft teal cruiser. It has a Honda 10hp CDI 4stroke engine that I'm told has a charging circuit? I'm not sure how old the engine is but its a pull start model and just says "Honda 100" on the side of it. I've checked the connector (that I was told was the charging circuit) with a volt meter with the engine running but it just sits at 0 volts. Is it true that it does have some means of providing 12vdc for charging batteries?
Any help greatly appreciated folks!
Regards
Paul

Mine charges and is the same as you described.

Take a picture of where you are testing the voltage.

Hi Tacklewasher
Thanks for the reply. I'm due over at the marina later so I'll whip the lid off and take a few snaps. From memory, they're red and green wires in a rubber connector.
Thanks again for the info! :D

Hi
I had a wander down to the marina and took a few pics of the engine... I'm holding the "supposed" charging connector. Its a red and green wire but that's about all I've been told. They certainly have no voltage on them with the engine ticking over!
Thanks in advance for any help! :D

Is the oil pressure light working? If so ,so is the charging system. That charging system needs to be connected to a load to operate,in otherwords a battery, and will not operate without it but will generate the voltage needed to keep the engine alive. As I said ,if the oil light comes on you are generating voltage to keep the light on and therefore the charging system is intact.

What you have in your hand is not the hook up for the charging system. Standing at the front of the motor, the throttle is on your right, the charging plug would be on the left. it has a rubber boot and two male terminals one horizontal, one vertical. Remove the cover and trace the wires to find the hot side of the battery, I used 12 gauge wire on mine. you should have a receptacle plugged into it with a boot on. Slide the boot off and connect the your wires to the appropriate screw and run wires to your battery.

Hi
Well, what someone has done who had the boat before myself is hack out the oil pressure light and refit it on the dashboard in the boat. It does illuminate when the engine is running. I just hope its illuminating to show there is oil pressure there and its not connected to the charging circuit! The wiring is a complete and utter mess in the engine. There has been a kill switch fitted to the engine that I've been told never to touch the back of when the engine is running as its part of the CDI circuit? I believe that's quite a high voltage to ignite the plugs? Anyway, its a real mess and has wires hacked and cut all over the place. If anyone possibly has a schematic wiring diagram for that engine it would really help! Anyway Hondon, I really appreciate the help!

Hi Lee
Thanks for the info! Have I got this right then? There is a connector to the left of the engine with two wires that has a protective boot over the end of it and that has +12v and 0v on it? Will it still issue 12vdc without a load or would I need to connect a battery to it in order to have it working? Do I need to unscrew anything to get at this connector or is it just loose in the engine? You wouldn't happen to have a photo would you Lee? Sorry about the questions, I'm normally fine with electrics (as I'm an electrical engineer!) but the mixture of outboard engines and wires that are all cut and badly joined together is a bit frustrating!

Paul,
Yes you should have 12 volts on one of the prongs. No picture as i have sold the motor. Just pry off the boot, run the wires through the boot, connect them to the appropriate side of the battery run wires (12 gauge is OK) to the hot and neutral on your battery and away you go.
