Okay, I have a 97 Merc, 4.3 LX Gen+ V6 engine with about 255 hrs. The carb. was rebuilt 5 years ago. I recently took the boat out. After a day on the water I left an island and throttled up. As I did the boat died and the engine shut off. I recranked immediately and again throttled up. The boat repeated the same behavior. I recranked and allowed the boat to idle. I throttled up the engine in neutral with no problems. I then again tried to throttle up in gear, and again the engine died. Eventually the engine would not even crank and remain running.

While on the water I checked the carb and observed it to be dry. I have an spare jumper wire that forces my fuel pump to run when the jumper has power. I make the attachment briefly. I could smell fuel, the engine cranked and I idled back to the ramp without incident.

At first the mechanic did not see any fuel in the carb. He pulled the fuel line on the tank and attached it to a spare tank. Still no fuel. He unbolted the fuel line from the carb and did not see any fuel, but made the connection using the spare wire on the fuel pump. The fuel pump worked properly and pumped fuel to the carb. The mechanic changed out the anti-siphon valve on the tank and sent me on my way. The engine cranked and ran fine. While he was there I had him change the water/fuel seperator.

Today, before going to the water I ran the engine using a flusher to make sure the engine was performing okay. I throttled the engine both in neutral and in gear with no problems. I traveled to the water, and went to put in. The engine cranked fine but after putting it in gear and idling away, the engine shut off. I cranked it and again the engine idled and shut down. I attempted to throttle it up in gear but the engine bogged down and shut-off. I took it home and again put the flusher on the engine. The engine ran fine without any abrupt shut-downs.

Help! What is up with this engine? The fuel is fresh and the carb was rebuilt 5 years ago. I feel like blowing a wad of money and buying a fuel pump.

Re: Starved Carb.

5 years ago is nothing.... ask any outboard person :D

In all seriousness.... when was the last time the engine had a full tune up?

do a search for "engine will not reach wot" and you'll find Don's list. The answer is in there.

well.... that may be part of your answer....
Full tunes should be done once a season as per mercruiser.

Re: Starved Carb.

get a fuel pressure gauge and see if you are loosing pressure, could be fuel pump worn out and not keeping up or getting hot and quitting. could be oil pressure switch trouble. put pressure gauge in between pump and carb

Re: Starved Carb.

I found that the carpet covered board that hides the batteries was resting on top of the vent hose to the fuel tank. I was wondering if that may be my problem. It would make sense that restricted air flow would not allow the fuel pump to pull the fuel. Whatcha think?
