1969 Evinrude 18 HP Fastwin
18902D - E12329 Converted to Short Shaft

I finally located and bought a driveshaft off of eBay. As I was examining the shaft I found all teeth sheared almost all of the way through and cracks in the troughs between the teeth.

If I installed this shaft could I expect to get any life out of it or should I expect it to break the first time I run aground?

Thanks,
Bob

How does the bearing and seal contact areas look? That thing obviously was taken out of a badly damaged/worn out gearcase.

I don't see the "cracks". It looks more like indentations from banging around on the splines in the pinion gear.

That shaft material is pretty tough stuff and probably will work if the bearing and seal area is good. Was it cheap?

F R, as usual you hit the nail on the head. Late hours, poor lighting, a little grit in the right spots, and the idea that nothing good could come out of buying outboard parts off of ebay had me convinced I had cracks and sheared splines.

After a through cleaning I used an eye loupe and could see indentations instead of fractures.

Included are PICS of the shafts bearing/seal area. I mic'd out the shaft and found the bearing surface diameter to be only .0002" (2/10ths of one thou.) less than the pristine areas adjacent.

$84.50 for all parts shown.

Thanks F R
Bob

Hi Lostuzer, is there any way I can convince you to part with the front prop shaft bearing for 10 or 15 dollars is there? I really need one and can't find one for a decent price. New ones are just too expensive ($60).

Let me know! Thanks.

If all those gears and clutch dog are in good condition, $85 is not a bad deal. 1 gear costs about $150 new if you have to go to the dealer and you have 3 of em...

Hey there! Any chance of you giving up the info on your eBay guy you got your driveshift from...? I'm in desperate need of one myself?

Thanx,

I would have to say you got a great deal at 85 dollars for all those parts. Rick.
