Manufacturer Information - Viking circa 1981

This is very frustrating to me and I hope someone here can give me a hand.

I have a 1981 Viking 1660 that you can see in my avatar. I have done my best to find specifications on this boat and continue to fail. The only real solid piece of information I have been able to gather is this:

While manufacturing folding camping trailers is currently the name of the game at Viking RV, that has not always been the case. In fact, when Coachmen Industries, Inc. acquired Viking in 1968 it was not known as Viking RV. Rather, the company's name was Viking Boat Company. And, as its name reveals, the business was focused on the production of boats. In the early 1970s, the production line was expanded to include fold-down camping trailers.

In 1976 the Viking Recreational Vehicle division was technically established; its purpose was to manufacture lightweight, durable fold-down camping trailers and truck campers. The Viking Boat Company was retained as a separate division until it was sold to Murray Chris-Craft in 1982.

Aside from that I can find no information on the internet about the Viking company or their boats. I've tried contacting ChrisCraft but since buying Viking, they have undergone massive reorganization and their information had become diluted:

1980: Chris-Craft boat manufacturing operations are sold to George Dale Murray.

1982: Murray buys Viking Boat Company, renaming it Chris-Craft Sportdecks?.

1989: Outboard Marine Corporation purchases Chris-Craft Boats.

1999: Chris-Craft brand celebrates 125th Anniversary.

2000: OMC files Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. Chris- Craft operations are put on hold.

2001: Chris-Craft was sold to London investment group, Stellican. Operations resumed and new owners revealed plans for the future with the introduction of three new Heritage models and a 43-foot Roamer Yacht.

2002: Chris-Craft unveils plans for two cuddy models on the Launch hulls and larger models up to 60 feet.

2004: Chris-Craft launches the Roamer 40 at the Miami International Boat Show. Chris-Craft celebrates its 130th Anniversary.

I am pretty adept at searching the internet for things, but the subject matter makes this tough. You try searching for "old Viking Boat" and see what you come up with. Obviously, I have tailored my search finer than this, but you get the idea.

There has to be some wise, old soul on this board that maintains information about long forgotten boat companies and I hope to draw that person or persons out.

Questions like yours come up quite frequently here. Typically, it's very difficult to find much information on 27 year old boats.

What "specifications" are you looking for? Your boat's capacity plate should tell you weight, passenger, and horsepower capacity. A tape measure will give you dimensional information.

There's not much other pertinent information that affects much.

My point is that long searches for such information is typically a waste of time, and affects nothing about the ownership of your boat.

That said, you can go to www.nadaguides.com, click boats, and drill down to Viking's 1981 line (the last year under that name). There was a 1660 both in inboard/outboard power and outboard power. You can find out the weight of the boat in either case, along with its rough value on the market.

Other than that, you'll have to rely on observation.

Re: Manufacturer Information - Viking circa 1981

Acutally, the weight was my main goal in finding out. The rating plate is faded and really not readable. There is no way that I can weigh the trailer seperate from the boat to get accurate numbers. I assume that weight is minus the outboard motor weight. I think I have the accurate weight on my trailer. So in order to find out the approximate boat weight, I need the weight of a 1981 115 Mercury TOP, the full fuel tank and subtract the weight of the trailer.

Thanks CAT, I appreciate your effort.

Not a problem. The weight is on the www.nadaguides.com site for your boat. That's the weight without outboard or any other equipment or fuel.

Let me look. It's 1350 lb. for the outboard model. Those weights are very accurate.

Your Mercury weighs 295 lb...same site.
