So i know that some older 4 strokes need lead substitute, but do older 2 strokes need it?

Also i have a 25hp evinrude motor, Not sure of the year, but kinda older. when you start it up it idles fine, but then dies after few seconds. It also backfires or something when it dies. Not sure what that is. I cleaned out the carb and still had the same problem. Any ideas?

It will run fine on 87 octane unleaded.2 strokes don't need leaded gas.
you have classic fuel supply symtoms. If squeezing primer bulb helps suspect pump or fuel line problem, blockage, air leaks etc.If choke helps suspect blocked passages or jets in the carb.

No 2 stroke ever needed lead, Bob. Unleaded is much better for them, always was.

Give us the model number off the plate on the transom mount. That will tell us the year.

Sounds like your engine is running out of gas. What happens if you pump the primer bulb?

I have a Chrysler 700, 1979 2 stroke 70hp. I would like to submit what is stated in the original factory user manual.

"Preferred Gasoline":

1st. Preference-LEADED Regular
2nd Preference-LEADED Premium
3rd Preference-Unleaded (OCCASIONAL USE ONLY)

Now what did I hear about "no 2 strokes need leaded gas?"
Is unleaded safe to use ALL the time?

I, for one, think this subject needs more review.

Sporty, you should start your own thread on your findings rather than bring up old threads and hijack them.

If you are worried about the valves in your motor then by all means use a lead substitute.

Sporty, I, for one, would think twice about arguing any point whatsoever with the salty dogs on this web site. These guys have no doubt had more water splash over them than you and I have had go under us. ;)

Tetraethyl lead used to be added to gasoline to lubricate the exhaust valves/exhaust valve seats on 4 cycle engines. That being said, there are no exhaust valves on 2 stroke engines; no valves, no reasoon to lubricate a non existing part. Unleaded runs cleaner, and back then, leaded was the norm, so they were probably saying that so you had fresh gas. I believe unleaded used to be called white gas, and was primarily used in torches and stoves. Rick
