Howdy, my '66 80 Starflite runs until the battery is dead. Obviously it is not charging the battery, as well as not producing any current to fire the plugs without the battery. Once a fully-charged battery is disconnected, the engine quits. The amp guage needle hangs in the positive zone (+15), especially when the rpms increase. Does any one have any ideas?

Also, is it possible to convert the points and condensor ignition on these engines to a HEI version. If so, how would I find the correct application?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

You are pumping 15 amps into the battery and it still goes dead? What is wrong with this picture? Sounds like you have a major electrcal load in the boat wiring, drawing more juice out of the battery than you are putting in.

Anyhow, disconnecting the battery when it is running is a great way to wreck the rectifier and/or voltage regulator.

Most people with the fancy electronic ignitions of those days are looking for a way to convert them back to automotive points & condenser systems. Consider yourself lucky.
