96 115 hp evinrude overheated

i bought a boat that the motor overheated. it is a evinrude 115hp i am pretty sure the guy did not pay attention that the waterpump went out. so i know i need to fix that but where should i start to find out what else maybe wrong with the motor?

The first thing to check is the compression on all of the cylinders.

tx1961 is right on. You don't want to sink any $ into an engine that has bad compression.
