First off, im new to boating and this is my first outboard, so bear with me. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I just got an old aluminum boat with an 18HP Nissan 2 Stroke. When i started it dry on land (with water attached) it ran pretty good and started on the second pull. When i put it in the water it took forever to start it. My concern is that i started to see "rainbow" oil slicks come up to the top of the water. I may have flooded the engine. When i finally got it started, it ran well. My second concern is that when i took it back out and ran it on land to flush it(water attached) a black oily substance seaped out of the prop exhaust. (wouldn't start, may have flooded again) Is this normal? I thought it was the gear oil passing a seal, but i took the prop and shaft off and everythigng looked ok. Im just wondering if i should be concered that the oily substance is seaping out of my exhaust when i crank the engine.

The black oil is almost certainly unburned fuel/oil seeping down the leg and out through the propeller. That's normal. The rainbow is a sign of fuel leakage or possibly just flooding.

it sounds like you need to clean the carb or even better to rebuild it
