I'm about to purchase a Johnson Seahorse 2 hp model #j28cne s/n cb163153. Can anyone tell me what year this was manufactured and any other information about what I should look for on it?

i cannot match J28cne. all i can find are 2hp J2R****, J28 would be a 28 hp, and the letters do not match.

J2RCNE is a 1982 2hp Johnson. Could your "8" actually be an "R"?

It could be - I actually haven't seen the motor yet but will on Friday. Thanks for the info.

When you rev it up in the bucket make sure the throttle lever doesn't vibrate back down to idle.

Make sure the pull recoil assembly is smooth and retracts good.

Make sure it pumps water pretty good out the back.

Don't be scared off if it doesn't idle that great. There's high and low speed adjustment knobs that take some fiddling around with in order to get it run just right.

F_R you are right. The model number is: J2RCNE so it must be the 82. I did not get to see it run, but the starter rope pulls, prop moves, and the rope returns smoothly. I would guess the most important things to check are plug/gap, lower gear box oil and the water pump impeller. Would you recommend pulling it apart to check the impeller or just seeing how the output is once I get it started? Also, do these things run on the standard 50:1 mix I use for chainsaws, blowers, etc? Thanks.

DO NOT use the same pre-mix that you use for the air cooled lawn equipment. The 2-cycle oil is different between air and water cooled engines. Use a TCW-3 outboard motor 2-cycle oil.
The mixture is 50:1 for your boat motor
