Johnson 115 hp lube level plug

I am a new owner of a 2000 Johnson 115. The O&M manual says that in order to replace gearcase lubricant that step 1 is to remove drain/fill plug and lubricant level plug from side of gearcase and completely drain gearcase..... It is accompanied with a picture showing the location of both plugs. However while there is a drain/fill plug, there is no lubricant level fill plug on the engine (that I can find, certainly not where the manual shows it to be). A buddy more familiar with outboards said he too was stumped in finding the lube level fill plug.

Where is this plug located? How do I know when enough lube has been added?

Bubba, welcome to the forum. Add some pics of both sides of your lower unit and we'll be able to show you the two plugs they refer to.

Pretty well standard on most lower units (at least that I've worked on and/or have seen)

It should be no more than 10-12 inches higher on the same side as the drain plug.

Ditto on the welcome to the forum. The experts here, which I am NOT, can help you through any problem if you give them enough info to work with. For instance, BRP Parts website shows two different gearcases for 2000 model 115HP Johnson motors. You can look at them yourself:

You fill through the drain plug (bottom). I know that sounds crazy but you want to push fluid up to eliminate air bubbles.

You need to actually bend over and look at the bullet on the lower unit. The plug there is the drain plug. The other plug is located, as was pointed out, about 10 inches up the side of the lower unit. The reason you MUST fill from the bottom up is trying to force lub in through the top hole creates pressure in the lower unit since it is sealed. You therefore would spend an eternity trying to get it full. You fill from the bottom up until lub runs out the top hole. Insert the top plug first, then the bottom. Yes, I know that sounds backwards but for the same reason you fill from the bottom is the same reason you insert the top plug first. There is a phillips head screw on the side of some lower units. Do not remove that screw. It has nothing to do with draining or adding lub and you will be sorry you removed it.

Here on this exploded view of a 115 HP Johnson lower unit (again we don't know your specific model but its the same on all of them and the servicing is how others above explained)

Note, I've circled the screw/washer shown as #41 and #42 on the diagram and an arrow to the vent and drain holes.
