I noticed that every time I come to iboats forums, I get hit with two tracking cookies. They are blocked by AVG protection. But I'm wondering why iboats needs tracking cookies on a message forum?

The cookie allows you to see what is new from your last visit

Not the iboats signon cookie, I'm talking about PUP cookies like ADMTD and 2o7 that track where you go. These cookies have nothing to do with "remember me signon" or "new posts". They are strictly invasive.

The 2o7 cookies are maintained by Omniture Inc., a Web analytics firm. Omniture helps its roster of high-profile clients, including Ameritrade Inc., eBay Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Expedia Inc., study how people use their Web sites. The cookies track users anonymously, and that the information helps its corporate clients enhance their Web sites and study the effectiveness of marketing campaigns by knowing where you went on the internet.

Strictly invasive. Nothing to do with the forum.

Why does iboats allow them from their advertisers?

Mark, this is not official from iboats. but my way of thinking. the forum is a marketing tool of the iboats.com. this would give them info where to direct there advertising. not a bad trade off, for all the free advice that goes thru here.

I'll drink to that. Course your idea of a long time depends on how much scotch you have consumed or what period of time. SEE: Why I post....

Re: Whats with the tracking cookies?

Mark,
We are trying to catch you entering in your SS# or bank account numbers or at least find something in your surfing behavior that would allow us to blackmail you. How else do you think iboats survives?

People can jump to the conclusion that iboats is trying to do something nefarious with the use of a couple of cookies.... OR...maybe there are a couple of benign helpful reasons. How about these:

1. iboats USES Omniture for our own internal tracking. Wow! Who could have thought?!?!? You mean to say iboats isn't using Omniture to then sell the data to ebay or Amazon? You have misunderstood what Omniture is and does. iboats PAYS Omniture $$ six figures per year to help us track our own traffic. Why? To help us to see what is happening on our site and then try to improve. We are talking site analytics here. Omniture has no right to share this data with anyone else and I can promise you that iboats doesn't sell or share any of this data.

2. My guess is that the other cookie is for our ecommerce area. It helps keep your shopping cart full of stuff if you leave our store without checking out. I hope that isn't too offensive.

I was a little sarcastic in this post, but come on; do you really think iboats would be engaged in trying to exploit our valued members? We deeply appreciate the long-term members and our repeat customers. We would have neither if we abused you more than our sometimes-slow servers already do. ;)
