Spark Plug Wire Shock

I recently acquired a 1989 Force 125. The motor will start, but it seems to have a miss at all RPM levels. The miss is sporadic, and a mechanic told me that it is electrical, but he can?t seem to track down the issue (I think he didn?t want to spend any time on it.) The interesting thing is that if I touch any of the spark plug wires at the plug end while running, I get a nice little shock. If I grab the wire anywhere else, nothing. Is this normal?

I know that this could be a ton of things, but if anyone has seen or heard of anything similar, I would love to hear from you.

Thank you in advance.

First thing is do a compression test. If that's ok and you get a shock from all the cylinders there might be a loose ground. You can try changing the plug wire ends.Jerry

Re: Spark Plug Wire Shock

I checked all of the cylinders and there is even compression across all 4. I checked the ground and everything seems ok. After checking, I hooked it up to the hose and started it up. It seemed to be running great, so I took it to the lake. Once it was in the water it started missing again.

I removed the rectifier for kicks and it seems to be burned out. Any chance that it could be the culperate for the miss or the shock from the spark plug wire?

Re: Spark Plug Wire Shock

I just installed a brand new gas tank this weekend that I bought from iboats.com. It has fresh gas, oil and a little gas stabilizer for good measure.

It sure sounds like a bad connection somewhere. If you have the tools (spark testers)you can hook them up and run it and see which cylinder is breaking down. It could be a weak pack or bad trigger or stator.Try running with the tach un-hooked. Jerry
