lower unit leaking gear oil ?

hi everyone . i noticed my motor is leaking gear oil out behind the prop , i would think the seal is shot . is this something that i can repair my self or should i take it to the shop and let them do it ? the motor is a 1990 johnson 140 horsepower . thankyou .

1st thing to do is to pressure/vacuum test the LU. Drain the gear oil (check for any water) then pressurize to 15 psig max. If it holds some pressure for 45 minutes, it's OK. The vacuum test, same deal. When pressurized, submerge under water if any leakage is occurring to tell where the leak is.

If you've never taken a LU apart, you may want a dealer to do the work. BTW, are you sure the oil isn't unburnt 2 stroke oil?

You need to pull the carrier and have a seal kit to do the prop shaft seals. If you have the right tools, it is easy enough. The "right tools" includes the factory service manual.
