Im tring to repaint and restore an older fiberglass boat. The paint seems to be in alright condition. There seems to be only cracks in the paint and none of the bubbleing. Ive completly riped everything out of it and would like to repaint it. I have professional spray equipement at hand(thank you work). What is my next step???? Sand the boat but how much??? what about the cracks (mainly around holes drilled for seats and ect.)??? Can i use and automotive finish????

First, you can "USE" anything to paint your boat. Even good ole' Krylon. but if you want it to protect, last and look good you need to use marine paint. Take a look in this forum and find the Hull Extension project by Oops!. Towards the end of his post there are explanations of what he did to re-finish his hull.

Second, if you are "restoring" this I would reccomend that you evaluate how far you are willing to go with it. Just tossing a fresh coat of paint and some new interior on a boat will not make it more sea-worthy or safe. if this is something you really want to jump into your first plan of attack should not be to paint, it should be to evaluate the condition of the hull, stringers, transom and powertrain. Once you get the guts in tip top shape then you can worry about what it looks like :)

I also reccomend posting some pics here under your thread, you will get more replies from people with suggestions. you would be surprised what some of these guys can spot from just a photo. Keep in mind though, it is your boat, and no amount of suggestions can make you do something you do not want to do. Its your baby now, have fun!

Good luck to you and Welcome to Iboats!

What DrCox said. Plus welcome to iboats.

And -

The type of paint depends on how you plan on using the boat.
If trailered or moored.
Different bottom paint would be needed. Top side paint could be anything.
Some auto paints work well but it is usually more expensive than marine paint.
iboats sells several brands and lots of types of marine paint.
Determine your boat use, how long you think you will have the boat and find a paint. Buy the thinners recommended by that manufacturer for there paint. Some manufacturers have different thinner for spraying vers roll and tip brushing. Don't mix different brands.

Can i use and automotive finish????

Welcome, Hi, how's it going?

Imron has been used for years in the marine environment for painting. It's an automotive finish by dupont. Be prepared though, if you check it out, it's no bargain basement paint.

Enjoy

Or, (Cut and Paste from another thread)

First, CONGRATS on your new project. I am sure it will look real nice when its done.

As far as uploading pics, there are a couple posts on the forum about how to do it. I will run you through how to do it on photobucket (since that is all i know)

1.) Go to http://www.photobucket.com and create yourself an account, its free.
2.) Take the pictures you want to post and upload them to your photobucket space.
3.) type a new post here, and click the yellow icon above to insert images. *(note: you may have to install Iboats.com's image tool)
4.) On photobucket, double click on the "direct link" option below the picture. It will flash a yellow "copied" window (see pic below)
5.) paste it in the pop up window for the image URL (make sure there are not 2 "http://" I have done that before)

Now you should be good to go. Any more questions you can PM me if you like.

Good luck! -DrCox
