1971 Johnson 9.5 again

I replaced every single ignition component.

condensers, coils, contacts, points, and spark plug wires.

STILL not getting spark on 1 side. Points set at .20

this is driving me mad. It makes me sick to have to take it somewhere and pay all that money, but I want to be able to use the motor.

any last ideas? the whole ignition is new parts!

Did you disconnect the kill wires?

yes i disconnected the kill wires and tried that.

I set the points with a feeler gap setter. Its just weird and driving me crazy.

i just took the old coils out and disconnected the plug wires and then twisted on the new ones real well and ran them under the magneto and between the throttle cam. I mean this stuff is pretty straight forward I am just not getting a good result.

I dont know

It's all about the details. What follows is in a repair manual for your motor and you should have one.

Make sure coils are properly mounted to the armature plate. The coils have to be aligned so that their bases are aligned with the mounting boss on the armature plate. Make surface A flush with surface B.

To set point gap:

Rotate crank shaft until key way is aligned with points rub block(part that touches the point cam), set point gap to .020 ....not .20 , for the first set of points.

Rotate crank shaft 180 degrees and again, align key way with rub block, set point gap to .020 for second set of points.

Make sure condenser and coil wires are not hitting the flywheel. Replace flywheel and test for spark.

Yeah I agree with X and i here. try removing and isolating the kill wires. And make sure the coil wires that go to the points are not pinched under the coils. They like to find there way between the coil and the mag plate bearing boss under there. Good luck

Re: ignition driving me crazy

you also have to make sure the pin in the coil, hits center of the wire, also the plug end, i strip back part of the wire, and wrap it around the spring, before putting the boot on.

You might swap the coils see if the problem follows.

Re: ignition driving me crazy

I put points, condensers, coils and wires in my '56 10 horse today. I noticed that the felt pads that came with the sierra points were very thick. Much thicker than what came with the points from OMC. I had to snip off about 3/16" from the end of it to keep it from holding the points open on that side. You might check that possibility out if you used Sierra points. Long shot I admit but possible.

(Magneto Coil Alignment)
(J. Reeves)

To align the coils properly, have the metal vertical portion of the coil yokes aligned with the inside edge of the bevel that exists on the top portion of the aluminum seat upon which the coils sit. This creates the proper distance between the coils and the flywheel magnets. Faulty alignment creats friction and the yokes of the coils heat up, turn blue and expand.

(Point Setting Of Magneto Models)
(J. Reeves)

Set the points as follows. Have the flywheel key aligned with the fiber rubber portion of the ignition points. Adjust the gap so that a .020 gauge will pass thru but a .022 will not. Should there be any question of the points being dirty (touching the contact with your finger would cause them to be dirty), clean them with a small brush and acetone or lacquer thinner.

NOTE: Should the operating cam have a small portion on it with the word "SET" imprinted, align this portion with the fiber rubbing portion instead of the flywheel key.

(Magneto Capacitance Discharge Coils - Continuity Test))
(J. Reeves)

Check the continuity of the ignition coils. Remove the primary orange wire from whatever it's connected to. It may be connected to a powerpack screw type terminal, a rubber plug connector, or it may simply plug onto a small boss terminal of the coil itself.

Connect the black lead of a ohm meter to the spark plug boot terminal, then with the red ohm meter lead, touch the ground of the coil or the powerhead itself if the coil is still installed.

Then touch (still with the red lead) the orange wire if it's attached to the coil, or if it's not attached, touch the primary stud of the coil. You should get a reading on both touches (contacts). If not, check the spring terminal inside the rubber boots of the spark plug wire. Poor or no continuity of a coil is one reason for s/plug fouling.
