I have a 1991 40hp Evinrude that I use alot for backtrolling. My problem is that after 15-20 minutes of backtrolling the motor will quit. It will start right back up again and run fine for awhile then stop again.I have checked my compression and it's good (130 on both cyl.), also my rpms in forward gear are between 750-800.It runs great at all other throtle positions, otherwise it is a great motor.Any suggestions on how I can fix this problem would be appreciated greatly!

The 40hp is not really designed for trolling, however......... when it stops, does it sort of slow down snd stop like it's running out of gas, OR does it encounter a mild backfire sound effect like the carburetor spitting back, OR does it simply stop suddenly like one would turn the key off?

Joe,

Sometimes it slows down and acts like it's running out of gas and other times it is like I turned off the key. It has never backfired on me.

open your spark plug gap to .035 or .040. and try it. we do it on motors we troll with, helps cutdown on fowling.

Two strokes often foul up at slow speeds. Give it a blast now and again to clear it out, or, lean off the mixture a bit for going slow. If too lean and you blast it though it can sieze.

And that's why I prefer the original setting of .040 .
